The scenic by-ways of Mid Coast Maine are ideal for exploring by automobile or bicycle. A turn off Route 1 down one of the region’s peninsulas could bring you to miles of beach, a lighthouse guarding a rocky point, or a fishing village, complete with lobster dock and island views. Coastal Route 1 and the Maine Eastern Railroad link the towns of Maine’s Mid Coast, crossing marshes and spanning rivers, with spectacular vistas and charming nooks all along the way. In the fall, red and gold foliage make a perfect counterpoint to the ocean's blue. Ferries connect the mainland to island communities, while charter boats and a host of other vessels travel the ocean, inlets and rivers that define the geography of the Mid Coast region. For a more focused look at Mid Coast life past and present, take a guided tour of historic homes and gardens, or get on board for a lighthouse excursion, bird-watching or whale-watching cruise.
